 Yoshitomo Nara est né à Aomori en 1959.Après des études universitaires à Tokyo et Nagoya, il enseigne dans des écoles d’art puis s’installe en Allemagne en 1988. Il termine ses études d’art à l’Université de Düsseldorf. Aujourd’hui, il partage son temps entre l’Allemagne et le Japon.  Il est l’un des plus grands artistes contemporains du Japon. S’il peut être relié historiquement au courant pop de Tokyo et à la culture japonaise de l’hyper-consommation, il est en fait un artiste inclassable. A travers ses visages d’enfant, c’est la mémoire qu’il interroge. Ses sculptures et ses dessins dégagent une énergie étrange, une rage refoulée .Yoshitomo Nara expose dans les plus grands musées d’art contemporain aux USA, au Japon et en Europe. Ses œuvres figurent notamment dans les collections du Musée d’Art Moderne de San Francisco et du Musée d’Art Contemporain de Los Angeles.
